“You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.” ― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince And nerve these gals have in spades. This week it was a fun and a tiny bit chaotic tutorial...but in the end, they managed to make the magic happen.(They decided to go with toilet paper rolls. We don't have the budget to CGI the effects later like in the HP movies. Did you know they used real candles hanging from wires? but they broke off and were a safety hazard...so they switched to CGI ones.) Without further ado...here are Jen's tips for making floating candles..... Candle Tip #1 Because the toilet paper rolls aren't perfectly round, it is easiest to glue them to the paper then cut around to form the bottom of the candle. (For safety measures and because it just looks rad wear ultra hipster sunglasses. You never know who will see you getting your craft on. So better do it in style.) Candle Tip #2 Doing multiple layers of hot glue strips of different lengths on your candle will give it the appearance of having been lit/melting several times. (Also make sure that you don't put the hot glue on your aluminum paper...or just watch the video and see what happens.) Candle Tip #3 When painting the shadow colors on the candle, avoid painting on the "wax", paint beside the wax drips instead. Also, adding water to the paint will help it to go on smoother and look more natural. Candle Tip #4 In order for the battery operated tea light to sit in the candle without falling through, you poke four holes and string a cross with the fishing line. The four lines are tied above the candle (one is left long) so that it hangs straight. This was an amazingly fun item to make and we can't wait to see how you created yours.
